Vine Memorial is blessed with a manifestly buoyant and burgeoning Alumni Association in the US that can, without doubt, also rank alongside kindred alumni organizations in the Western world. The Thanksgiving Service was at once inspiring and solemn, and reflected in all its manifestations, the theme for the day, which was so well and pointedly articulated by my friend and preacher, the Rev. Dr. Sesay. The turnout of the Association's members was resplendent and was so indicative of the pride that we should all take in one's alma mater. This was accompanied by the diverse financial pledges made to assist in the ongoing project for refurbishing the dilapidated and "dying" structures of good old Roosevelt Secondary School. The initiative of the pledges campaign was that of the preacher, the Rev. Dr. Sesay, and was ably complemented by the efforts of the Rev. Frank Smart. Many in the congregation heard the cry for for financial support, rose to the occasion, and donated monies for purchasing bags of cement. The enthusiasm with which the pledges were raised was both commendable and exemplary. Blessed are those, therefore, who continue to foster with pride, the ever urgent need for enhancing female education in Sierra Leone. Together with Ellen, we were among those who defied the inclement weather, in damp, dank, and dreary Maryland to attend the service, held in a wonderful sanctuary. Indeed, the Association reciprocated with a sumptuous dinner and we could not have asked for more.
The alumni officially launched on July 31, 2021, followed by our first Thanksgiving service on January 29, 2022, held via Zoom during COVID-19. We had our first in-person meet-and-greet on July 30, 2022. After the association's launch, members began meeting on Zoom to discuss the school's plans. Our first project was the school’s stage.
